Psoriasis, Eczema and Rheumatism: The Immune System's Sibling Diseases

Although psoriasis, eczema and rheumatism may look different at first glance, they are “sibling diseases” directly related to the immune system that can affect one another. They can occur together in the same person, can trigger one another, and share common treatment paths.

Immune-based mechanisms

Psoriasis (excessively fast renewal of skin cells, thick red scaly plaques), eczema/atopic dermatitis (an itchy, dry, inflammatory skin disease of an allergic nature), and rheumatism (in inflammatory types in particular, the immune system turns against the joints; psoriatic arthritis can affect both the joints and the skin).

How can they trigger one another?

Some psoriasis patients develop joint involvement (psoriatic arthritis); in people with eczema, an autoimmune tendency can increase over the long term; some rheumatic diseases can appear with psoriasis-like skin symptoms. Shared triggers: stress, infections and genetic predisposition.

Modern treatment approaches

Topical treatments (moisturizers, barrier strengtheners), phototherapy (especially in psoriasis), systemic treatments (in moderate-to-advanced cases under a physician’s supervision), lifestyle adjustments (stress management, nutrition, sleep), and a multidisciplinary approach (dermatology and rheumatology specialists working together).

Conclusion

All three are a reflection of a disruption in the body’s internal balance. A person who has one can also develop another — early diagnosis and a holistic approach are important. Treatment should be planned individually.
